On May 22, 2026, a gas explosion accident occurred at Liushenyu Coal Mine in Qinyuan County, Shanxi Province. Up to now, 82 fatalities have been confirmed. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but public information indicates that the involved enterprise had long-standing violations, falsified drawings, missing personnel positioning cards and other problems, resulting in successive failures of safety defense lines.
This mining disaster, the deadliest in the local area over the past 15 years, serves as another warning: underground mines leave no room for fluke mentality, nor can any negligence be tolerated.
Underground operations are permanently high-risk due to high gas concentration, heavy dust, high humidity, intense vibration, coupled with complex and changeable geological conditions. In most cases, every standardized operating procedure, every accurate data feedback and every stably operating equipment is vital to the safety and efficiency of underground work.
Magnetostrictive displacement sensors constitute one of the key components in modern mining equipment.
The position variation of hydraulic cylinder piston rods on shearers, roadheaders and hydraulic supports requires real-time sensing and precise feedback. Precise equipment movement guarantees stable and efficient tunneling, support and other operations; reliable displacement feedback enables safer operation of equipment control systems. For this reason, magnetostrictive displacement sensors have become indispensable measurement and control devices underground.
Compared with traditional measurement methods, magnetostrictive displacement sensors feature non-contact measurement, high precision and superior stability. They provide real-time feedback on piston positions of hydraulic cylinders and deliver credible data support for equipment control systems. The Zheda Jingyi GUC3000 mining displacement sensor achieves high-precision position feedback down to 1 μm.
Nevertheless, accurate measurement is merely the baseline for underground applications. Sensors must also deliver sufficient reliability to withstand harsh underground conditions. Zheda Jingyi GUC Series Mining Displacement Sensors are tailor-made for coal mine safety monitoring and equipment control scenarios.
Products in this series have obtained the Coal Safety Mark Certificate, which verifies that the sensors have passed stringent tests and assessments for mine environments and meet safety requirements for coal mine applications. This certification is far more than a document; it proves that the product meets underground application standards in structural design, material selection, reliability and safety performance.
Explosion protection is equally critical.
Underground coal mines often contain flammable and explosive substances such as gas and coal dust. Sparks or high temperatures generated by electrical equipment may trigger severe accidents. Worse still, if equipment lacks explosion-proof performance, secondary disasters may occur even after an initial explosion (such as the Shanxi coal mine accident mentioned above. Explosion-proof capability helps mitigate risks at the source.
Zheda Jingyi GUC Special Underground Magnetostrictive Displacement Sensor carries explosion-proof marks Ex ib I Mb / Ex d I Mb. Explanation as follows:
-
Ex: Symbol for explosion-protected electrical equipment
-
ib: Intrinsically safe protection level. By limiting voltage, current and energy within internal circuits, sparks or short-circuit faults cannot ignite gas or coal dust.
-
d: Flameproof protection level. Should sparks or explosions occur inside the equipment, the housing can withstand internal blast pressure and prevent flames from propagating outward, avoiding ignition of underground gas and coal dust.
-
I: Applicable to underground coal mine gas environments
-
Mb: Indicates high-level safety protection for mining applications.
Simply put, this enables the product to operate safely in complex underground coal mine environments.
In addition, Zheda Jingyi underground displacement sensors reach IP67 ingress protection rating, effectively coping with dust, moisture and other harsh mine conditions, and maintaining stable performance amid humid, dusty and vibrational surroundings.
The Shanxi coal mine accident sends a renewed reminder to the whole industry: work safety must never rely on luck.
Reliable monitoring equipment, stable sensing systems and strict control over every detail form an indispensable part of the modern mine safety system.
